Siblings and summer holidays
Many of you are starting your summer break from school around this time. While it’s great to have a rest, we know from talking to siblings that summer can also feel a bit tricky at times. That’s completely normal.
You might be feeling this way because:
- The usual routine has changed, and that can be unsettling for your brothers or sisters
- Parents or carers might be too busy to do fun activities.
- It can seem like everyone else is off having amazing adventures while you’re not.
- You may be asked to take on more responsibility to provide more care especially if you care for a brother or sister:
These feelings are totally understandable. But there are little things you can do that might help make your summer feel brighter. One idea is to spend time with different family members—people you don’t normally see much during the school term. Think about:
- A grandparent you don’t visit often
- An aunt, uncle, or cousin who lives nearby
- An older sibling or cousin who’s home from college
Spending time with someone new can really lift your mood. Whether it’s baking, playing a game, chatting, or just being in a different home, it can give you the break you need and give you someone who might be able to do fun stuff
Why not ask a parent or carer to help you plan a visit with other family members? Even short visits can make a big difference. And if visiting in person isn’t possible, try a phone or video call—or even send a letter or postcard. That can be just as special.
We’d love to hear how you’re spending your summer at home—what’s helping, what’s been fun, or even what’s been hard. Please get in touch and share your story with us!
