I have to look after my sister all the time

Many siblings help their parents to look after their disabled brothers and sisters. Even though they love their brothers or sisters, it can still be really hard. All families like to help each other but it’s also really important to have time for yourself and to be able to do your school work.

Some things you can do if you are doing too much care

1

Make a list of all the things you are doing to help your disabled brother or sister and ask your parent if someone else can help with some of these.

2

Talk to your teacher if the care you are doing is stopping you from doing your homework.

3

Some siblings do an awful lot of care – these siblings are young carers. Tell us at YoungSibs and we can help you find a young carers’ group where you live.

I told my teacher that my homework was late in because I had to look after my brother. She was really understanding and now I get extra time to finish work at home which really helps me.
