FREE packs to support siblings in primary schools
Do you work in a school or education setting? Would you like to support your pupils who are growing up with a brother or sister who is disabled, has special educational needs (SEND) or a serious long-term health condition? We have created a ready-made, easy-to-use information and intervention pack specifically crafted to help you support siblings of disabled children to flourish in their education.
There are an estimated two siblings of disabled children in every classroom. Siblings often get less attention from parents and have more worries and responsibilities than their peers. They may have difficulties in school because of their sibling experiences: being a sibling can affect a child’s attendance, educational attainment and have an impact on their friendships and social life too. By requesting this pack, you’re helping to give siblings equal access to the education and experiences that they deserve by recognising and removing some of the barriers that they face.
What does the pack include?
This pack includes:
- An information leaflet about our services that you can share with parents and siblings, empowering them to access our support when they need it. Keep copies available in your pastoral care offices and display them on noticeboards too.
- Key tips and advice for staff – 10 small but hugely impactful actions you can take that don’t require extra funding or lots of resources to carry out.
- Information about Sibs Talk, our one-to-one support intervention for pupils in Key Stage 2, evaluated by the University of Warwick. This powerful tool gives young siblings a voice, teaches them strategies for coping with difficult situations and enables schools to make positive changes that enhance siblings’ lives.
- Sibs Talk Lite, a condensed version of Sibs Talk that includes social stories and question prompts, teacher notes and a short, animated film about sibling life.[/accordion]
