September Spotlight Blog for Young Siblings

Being a sibling to a disabled brother or sister can bring up all kinds of feelings – some are easy to talk about, some are harder to put into words.  Sometimes it helps to get those feelings out in a different way. That’s where journalling can help.

Have you heard of journalling? It’s when you write (or draw) in a notebook about how you’re feeling and what you’ve been doing during the day.

Getting your thoughts out on paper can be a good way to work through tough emotions and calm a busy mind.  It can also help to write down two or three things you are thankful for each day.  They can be small things – like talking to a friend, eating a snack you love, or watching your favourite TV show. Focusing on a few positives doesn’t take away difficult feelings, but it can give your mind a little rest when things feel hard.

Journalling doesn’t have to be just words either.  You could draw a picture, doodle, or stick in photos and pictures that mean something to you.

If you’re not sure where to start, you could try finishing one of these sentences:

⭐ Today I felt….

⭐ Something that made me smile today was…

⭐Thank you for…

⭐ One thing I wish people understood is…

If you haven’t tried journalling before, why not give it a go? Lots of siblings have told us they find it a really calming thing to do 😊
