October Spotlight Blog for Young Siblings

Being a sibling to a disabled brother or sister can be great at times – you might have inside jokes, fun shared memories, and things you enjoy doing together. But it doesn’t always feel like that, and it can sometimes be confusing, tricky, or lonely.  You might feel like no one else understands what your life is like.  All of these feelings are okay.

Here’s something that might help knowing, you are not alone.  There are at least 708,000 young siblings who have a disabled brother or sister in the UK. That’s about 30 football stadiums full of people just like you! It also means there are usually about 2 siblings like you in every classroom.

YoungSibs is here for you, we have a big community of young siblings who use our website to find information, advice and support, ask a sibling advisor a question, and read a new Spotlight Blog (like this one!) every month.  They can also join in with events that we run from time to time, like online art classes.

As a sibling of a disabled brother or sister, it can be helpful to share how you feel with someone you trust.  Talking to a friend, a family member, or a teacher, can really help.  You don’t have to carry things on your own.

If things ever feel really heavy or worrying, you can talk to someone at Childline any time.  Call 0800 1111 or visit Childline.org.uk.
