June Spotlight Blog for Young Siblings
Siblings and questions
Has anyone ever asked you about your brother or sister’s disability, illness or special educational needs? Maybe a friend, someone at school, or even a stranger?
It can feel really tricky – especially if you don’t know what to say, or you just don’t want to talk about it. That’s completely okay.
Here are a few ideas that might help:
If you want to answer:
- Keep it simple – you don’t have to explain everything
- Try something like “my brother is autistic, it means he finds some things harder than other people sometimes”
- Remember – you are helping people understand
If you don’t want to answer:
- It’s okay to say “I’d rather not talk about it”
- Talk about something else instead
- You never have to share anything you don’t want to
If you’re not sure what to say:
- Talk to a trusted adult beforehand so you feel ready
- Practice with a grown up at home
- You could carry a small card explaining your brother or sister’s needs – many siblings find this really helpful
Remember – it’s always your choice what you share and what you don’t. But sometimes helping people understand can make things feel a little easier.
