I feel guilty

Siblings of disabled children sometimes feel guilty about being able to do things that their brother or sister can’t. Or they feel guilty about not wanting to play with their brother or sister all the time. It is a confusing feeling as many siblings feel this at times when they want to enjoy themselves or do their own thing.

Some things you can do if you feel guilty

1

Remember that it is OK for you to do things that you like and to enjoy your own life.

2

Remind yourself that your brother or sister’s disability or illness is not your fault. That is just how it is.

3

Instead of feeling guilty that your brother or sister can’t do things, think of all the things you do together that are fun.

I asked my mum if me and my friend could go into town without my sister. She was fine about it and understood that it was good for me to spend time with my friends.
