This week we are looking at how siblings can often understand what their brother or sister with additional needs wants just by reading their face. Many siblings say they can tell what their brother or sister needs, even when their parents don’t know.
There are lots of ways for siblings to communicate with their brother or sister including using Makaton (a type of sign language), drawing pictures, using body movements and showing feelings with their face. It can be a special bond between siblings and their brother or sister that adults don’t always have or understand.
Sometimes though it can be harder to know what your brother or sister need, especially if they are upset or angry. This is normal. Our Info and advice page has tips for communicating with my brother or sister that you can look through for suggestions.
Remember – It is OK if you don’t understand what your brother or sister wants and to allow the adults to work it out.
