I don’t like it when my brother goes into hospital

Siblings find it hard if their disabled brother or sister has to go into hospital overnight or for treatment. They worry about missing their parent, as well as worrying about their brother or sister.

Some things you can do if your brother or sister goes into hospital

1

Ask your parent to make a plan with you for the hospital stay so that you know who will be looking after you each day.

2

Ask your parent to explain what is happening and why your brother or sister needs to stay in hospital.

3

Help your disabled brother or sister to pack some favourite things to bring to the hospital – a special toy, favourite pyjamas, and a photo of you.

We know that siblings can find it really helpful to read about other siblings who understand what life is like for them. Click here to read Ethan’s story about how he felt when his brother went into hospital.

My mum makes sure that she emails and tells me how my brother is doing every night before I go to bed. It means that I go to sleep without worrying as much.
