Being Beside Them: Parent Workshop
Being beside them: Supporting your adult sons and daughters who have a disabled or neurodivergent brother or sister
Do you want to better understand what life is like for your adult son or daughter who has a disabled or neurodivergent brother or sister? Perhaps you’d like to feel closer to them, know how to support them better, learn what help is available, or start conversations about the future. This workshop offers a supportive space to explore these questions together.
Date and time
Monday 19th October, 7pm – 8.30pm
Online via Zoom
About the workshop
This is a friendly, relaxed and non-judgemental session for parents from all backgrounds – everyone is warmly welcome. To protect everyone’s privacy, no screenshots or recordings are taken and you can feel confident to share openly.
You’ll gain:
- A clear insight into what it’s like to grow up as an adult sibling to someone who is disabled or neurodivergent and how this experience can be different from a parent’s perspective
- Practical tips to help you build a stronger relationship with your adult son or daughter and better support them in their role as a sibling
- Information about where siblings can find additional help, advice, and support
- The chance to connect with other parents who have adult children growing up alongside a disabled or neurodivergent brother or sister
You can attend if:
- You’re a parent, step-parent, co-parent, grandparent or legal guardian of someone with a lifelong disability from birth and/or a neurodivergent condition
- You have one or more other son/daughter(s) who are aged 18 or over and you’d like to know more about how to support them
- You currently live in the UK
Who can’t attend?
This workshop is just for parents of adult siblings of people with a lifelong disability and/or neurodivergent condition. No professionals or people without a parenting role will be admitted.

FAQs
Why is there a charge for the event?
Hosting an online event takes a significant amount of time and planning and as a charity we’re not able to meet the full cost of this.
- The £10 ticket price is a fraction of the actual cost of your place. We are fortunate to be able to offer this very low ticket cost to parents, thanks to funding we have received
- The fee is non-refundable under any circumstances, because of the cost to the charity of processing this, unless the event has to be cancelled by us due to reasons beyond our control
- If you’re able to, please consider making an additional donation to cover extra places for parents in financial need
- If you’re in need of a free place, just let us know in confidence by emailing [email protected] – we don’t want payment to be a barrier for parents wishing to attend
I’ve booked a place, can my spouse/partner also join the call?
Yes, if they’re co-parenting with you. Please book them a space too (even if you’re joining from the same device) as we need to know how many are attending to help us plan the session.
I'm a grandparent, can I attend?
Yes, grandparents are welcome at this session. We recognise that many grandparents are closely involved in raising and supporting siblings.
Can I attend with my adult son/daughter?
It’s great that you want to share the experience with your adult son/daughter.
However, this workshop is just a space for parents. To help people speak freely about their experiences, we ask that only parents attend.
We’d encourage you to attend by yourself and chat to your adult son/daughter about your thoughts and experiences of the workshop after the event.
I’ve got more questions…
We’d love to hear them. Email any questions, big or small, to [email protected]
