It’s February already, and this month we’re celebrating Time to Talk Day on 6th February and Children’s Mental Health Week from 9th-15th February. These are important because they remind us how helpful it can be to look after ourselves and feel connected to other people.
Talking about how you feel is really important. This could be with a parent, carer, teacher or another adult you trust. Sharing worries or frustrations can help them understand what’s going on for you, and together you might think of ways to help you feel better.
Being a sibling of a disabled brother or sister can bring lots of happy moments, but we also know that it can be hard sometimes too. This year, Children’s Mental Health Week is about belonging. Belonging means feeling part of something – like your family, school, group of friends or a team. Feeling like you belong can help you feel happy, safe and supported.
One simple activity that can help is the ‘Hand of Support’:
- Draw around your hand one a piece of paper
- Write the names of people you trust on each finger
- Decorate your hand
- Keep it nearby as a reminder of who you can talk to if you feel worried or upset.
Remember, if you have questions, you can write to us – we’re here to help: Ask a sibling advisor – Sibs.
