Staying safe

Siblings tell us that they feel unsafe if their brother or sister has aggressive or violent behaviour. They worry that they might get hurt by their brother or sister or that their parent will get hurt. They feel sad and anxious that they don’t feel safe.

Some things you can do to help you stay safe

1

Ask your parent to make a plan with you to protect you from being hurt.

2

Leave the room if your brother or sister becomes violent.

3

Phone a family member or friend who can talk to you whilst it is happening and who will reassure you.

When my brother starts hitting out, I go out of the room and stay in my bedroom until he has calmed down. This is my safe space.
