Siblings sometimes need a lot of reassurance that parents love them as much as their disabled brother or sister. Here are some ways you can give your child the message that you love them.
Some ideas:
- Do something for your child that they would normally have to do for themselves
- Write a nice note for them to find in their lunch box or pencil case
- Send a text or WhatsApp saying that you love them
- Collect little things that you know your child likes – and then leave one of these with a note somewhere where they will easily find it
- Tell your child each day that you love them and use their name when you say this. Do it at an unexpected time of the day (not just bedtime or leaving for school)
- Create a special shared code for saying hello – like your very own style of handshake
- Put a fresh flower in their room
- Make them their favourite snack, milkshake or pudding
- Send your child a card in the post at random time (e.g. when it’s not their birthday)
- Draw a little doodle you know they’ll like and leave it on their pillow
