Saturday 5th December, 10am – 12pm

Sibs Trustee and solicitor Carol McBride join Sibs staff for this two-hour webinar via Zoom. Carol will present and answer your questions on the legal topics that many siblings need to know about such as next of kin, power of attorney, deputyship, wills, trusts and mental capacity. Many siblings have worries about these legal issues that have been heightened by the pandemic.

Since Carol qualified as a solicitor in 2002 she has specialised in the legal issues facing disabled people and their families. A director of Solicitor for the Elderly, having spent over 15 years in private practice as a specialist mental capacity and vulnerable client lawyer, Carol now works in local government, advising on adult social care law and policy. Carol advises Sibs on future planning and mental capacity resources for adult siblings.

Who can sign up?

These sessions are just for adult siblings of someone with a lifelong disability. A sibling-only environment helps siblings to feel comfortable sharing their questions with others who truly understand. No parents, partners, brothers/sisters, researchers or professionals will be admitted.

What can I expect?

  • A friendly hello from Sibs staff!
  • An expert presentation from Carol on topics such as next of kin, mental capacity, deputyship, power of attorney, wills and trusts. All the legal issues you need to know as a sibling
  • The chance to ask questions about the above topics
  • This is a webinar, not a video call – you will watch a live presentation by Carol and have the opportunity to type your questions in to the chat box on screen. You won’t have your camera or microphone on

What won’t be included?

  • This is a presentation and Q&A session. There won’t be the time or opportunity for you to meet and chat with other siblings. We have been running other sessions that offer this type of peer support
  • This session will focus on legal issues specifically relating to siblings and their circumstances. Other topics will not be covered at this event, as there will not be time

I can’t make it, but I’d still like the information

  1. Read the following guides for adult siblings, which are all available to download here
    a) Decision-making and the law: When your brother or sister can’t make a decision, who does
    b) Keeping savings safe: When your disabled brother or sister can’t manage a large amount of money, who can?
    c) Looking after money: When your disabled brother or sister needs support to manage their benefits and funding
  2. Want to hear about future sessions? Make sure you’re on our mailing list
