“Mindfulness helps me to switch off from the pressures of being a sibling carer for a little while, and to help me to calm down at the end of a stressful day. The worries and constant ‘to do’ list playing in my mind, are put aside and it is time for me to focus on myself only.” – Participant

Who can join?

This course is for adult sibling carers of someone with a learning disability.

What’s involved?

Be Mindful is an online mindfulness course. There are ten 10 short, easy-to-follow videos, featuring interactive exercises, all presented by qualified mindfulness trainers.

The course can be completed in as little as 4 weeks (but most people take a little longer).  The great news is, you can go at your own pace, so it fits around your life.

The sessions include:

  • Stepping out of automatic pilot
  • Reconnecting with body and breath
  • Working with difficulties
  • Mindfulness in daily life
  • Going forward

You’ll also have a peer mentor to check in with you along the way. This person will also be a sibling carer like you.

“I have found BeMindful really useful for making sure I set aside a little time for me and to help reduce my feelings of anxiety due to the constant pressures of being a sibling carer. It’s really helped me juggle my family and work as well and manage any feelings of stress I might feel across the day. It’s such a good course because you can fit it around your lifestyle and it teaches you skills for life” – Participant

What will I need to do?

Sibling carers will be asked to answer questionnaires on two occasions before and after they take part and will be asked if they are happy to be invited to an optional interview about their experience of the programme.

Please note that if you have previously taken part in Be Mindful, then you are not eligible to take part in this intervention. The project will run for around a year, from April 2022 to April 2023.
