Group outcomes

In order to measure the short and long term effectiveness of sibling groups we must establish outcomes that can be measured, both qualitativley and quantitativley. See Evaluation.

The outcomes need to be in line with the F.R.A.M.E. aims of the group and will keep you focused as a group leader. We suggest the outcomes below as they have been achieved by other groups with the same aims, both directly and indirectly as a result of siblings attending groups.

Fun

• Sibling will have enjoyed attending the group
• Sibling will have increased confidence to attend a mainstream youth or community group

Relieve isolation

• Sibling will have developed some friendships which will continue once the group has ended
• Sibling will know where they can turn for support

Acknowledge feelings

• Sibling will talk more about his/her experiences and feelings at home
• Sibling will show positive changes in behavior at home
• Parents will be more aware of the sibling's feelings

Model coping strategies

• Sibling will use helpful strategies for dealing with difficult situations
• Sibling will have an identified support network
• Sibling will have confidence to recognise when things are difficult and ask for help when they need it

Enhance knowledge

• Sibling will have an increased understanding of their brother's or sister's condition and its consequences
• Sibling will be able to describe the condition to others
• Sibling will have an improved relationship with his or her disabled brother or sister
