Reassure siblings that you love them
Siblings sometimes need a lot of reassurance that parents love them as much as their disabled brother or sister. Do those things that give your child the message that you love him or her.
Some ideas:
- Give a compliment about his/her appearance
- Do something for your child that he or she would normally have to do for themselves
- Put a nice note in their lunch box or pencil case
- Use magnetic letters to put a nice message on the fridge or stick a poster with a nice message on their bedroom wall
- Send a text saying that you love them
- Collect little things that you know your child likes - and then leave one of these with a note somewhere where they will easily find it
- Find something in schoolwork to compliment
- Tell your child each day that you love him/her and use their name when you say this
- Tell your child you love him or her at an unexpected time of the day (not just bedtime or leaving for school)
- Create a special shared code for saying hello - like your very own style of handshake
- Write a poem for your child – you don't need any skills for this, just a few lines that rhyme
- Put a fresh flower in their room
- Make them their favourite pudding
- Send your child an email saying you love him/her
- Send your child a card in the post when its not their birthday to arrive on Saturday morning.
