My family
Purpose
A chance for siblings to introduce their family to the group and begin to explore who is important to them. This may be the first time that siblings openly describe their home life.
It can also be a celebration of their family.
You will need
- A letter to send home prior to the group asking siblings to bring in a photo of their family
- A washing line and pegs or blue tack
- A box to collect all of the photos
How to do it
Collect the photos in the box. Hang them up on the washing line or blue tack them to the wall. Siblings then go round the 'hall of fame' and appreciate each other's family portraits.
A guessing game could be developed by workers regarding who's who in the picture, who looks like who, where they were at the time the photo was taken, who took the photo. Each sibling should have a minute to describe the snap and what it means to them.
Alternative activities
- Siblings draw pictures of their families or cut out shapes of people.
- Siblings draw their family tree.
- Siblings make playdough representations of their family members.
- Similar exhibitions and discussions can follow.
