Supporting a professional to run a group for siblings

The Issue:

Staff from Ellen Tinkham School in Devon had been trying to find funding to run a sibing group in their school but had not been successful to date. It is often hard for front line staff to know which sources of funding to look for to set up a group, and how to present the funding request so that it links in with local priorities for supporting children.

We were very inspired by the morning and resolved to set up a group from our school. Previously we had been 'beaten' by the difficulties in trying to obtain funding but your workshop made us determined to get something up and running.

The support given by Sibs:

Two staff from the school attended a Sibs' half day workshop for professionals in Exeter to learn about the issues facing siblings and how to make a case for developing sibling support in their area. Three staff then attended one of our sibling group leader training days on using Sibs FRAME model of sibling groupwork.

The impact on the sibling:

As a result of attending the events, the staff were able to get the funding and start a sibling group. They said: 'We were very inspired by the morning and resolved to set up a group from our school. Previously we had been 'beaten' by the difficulties in trying to obtain funding but your workshop made us determined to get something up and running. The first two sessions have already taken place and have been really well received by children and parents alike. Your help, support and expertise in this area has been, and continues to be, invaluable to us.'
