Supporting your brother or sister

Adult siblings provide a range of support for their brother or sister, from being just a brother or sister, being an advocate, or being a carer. This section will give you information on being with and supporting your disabled brother or sister.

I always knew at some point I would have to take over the care of my brother when my parents were too infirm. That day came last November.

But what do you do with a brother who lives in a whorl of chaos on the fringes of independence but who is adamant that he is "fine"?

Sibs helped me to answer this question with advice, further sources of help and contacts with others in a similar situation.

I am getting a clearer picture now of what support my brother could have, and how to deal with an adult who is deemed to have capacity but in reality struggles with money and is easily exploited by others.  In addition I have learnt how to balance the needs of my family and work, with the needs of my brother.

Caring for my brother is a long-term job but slowly, with help from Sibs & others, I will support my brother to live the life he wants to live.
