Wordsearch

Purpose
An interesting way to introduce sibling issues, or can be just a bit of fun. Most young people, particularly in the 6 to 11 age range, love to do a wordsearch.

You will need

A copy of the wordsearch, and a pen.

Tips for making a wordsearch

It is easy to write your own, with words related to a subject you would like to talk about later. See our example which is mainly about feelings. Sample wordsearch Other ideas could be favourite activities, types of disability, or family names.

Match it to the ability of the sibling

Words going left to right or top to bottom are easiest
Adding some backwards or upwards are harder
A few diagonals as well make it still harder, especially if they run right to left
For a more able siblings, give him/her the wordsearch without the list of words!

Do a rough copy - draw a grid and make a list of suitable words. Start with the longest words, and put them diagonally or close to the edge, then fit the others in. For young children, words should not share a letter.

Fill in the blanks with random letters (check you are not creating rude words by mistake, especially if using vowels!) or
Fit a message in the blanks, so it will be revealed when all the words have been crossed off (can you find the message in the example?)

Draw up a neat copy for photocopying or type it into a Word table

Alternatively www.pedagonet.com/words/fs.wordfinder.php will do most of the work for you! Just type your words in and click a few buttons.
